Now that I have studied Natural Nutrition as well as Functional Nutrition I am like holy sh*te, our liver is amazing!
This organ is one of the largest filters of our body! Our blood from our entire body is filtered by the liver EVERY 3 MINUTES. What? That is wild! Wow.. I can’t even do 15 push ups in that time (for realz). The liver has hundreds of different functions, some of which include the production and excretion of bile along with excretion of excess hormones.
With a well cared for liver we can expect to have: Good energy, strong digestion, happy hormones, good cholesterol and a regular detoxified body. You’ve got to appreciate the liver.
You see, what can happen though, over time is that our liver can become overburdened and sluggish from all the garbage we ship its way and the stuff it has to filter day in and day out. (Ex: diet + lifestyle habits)
Our liver is constantly filtering our blood which means it’s filtering out toxins from our diet and environment, ex: (things that we put on our skin, in our hair and the chemicals that we breath in).
All of THESE THINGS, the liver filters and converts into less toxic substances so that our body can ship it off to “another place” via the kidneys and colon. This is why it’s so important that our diet is nutrient dense, our bowels are working well and our body is detoxing daily! Some toxins, if not readily excreted can accumulate in our fat cells (xenobiotic) and that is no good for our health.
It’s important to reduce the toxins coming into our body, while nourishing our body with GOOD nutrition and lifestyle habits. This will support our liver and overall health.
Here are a few things you can try TODAY to give your liver some LOVE.
1) Eat the Colours of the Rainbow:
The more colourful fruits + veggies in our diet the better. These colour rich foods are nutrient and antioxidant dense which can support our liver health and detoxification. They are also alkaline forming in the body, which supports overall health and inflammation reduction.
2) Dandelion Tea:
This tea is produced from the dandelion root which is greatly supportive of liver health and detoxification. ?
3) Tackle Your Environment:
Consider for a moment the products that you put on your body, and the products around your home. Can you gradually go more natural with self care and cleaning products? EWG has a great site which helps to rate the toxicity of skincare and home products. Check it out!
4) Cruciferous Veggies:
These veggies are FANTASTIC for liver support. They help to speed up phase 1 and 2 of liver detoxification and their wonderful fibre helps to excrete toxins from our body via the colon.
Ex: Broccoli, kale, cauliflower, cabbage, brussels sprouts.
